Hawaii: Kailua-Kona

Friday, April 20, 2012

Today we left Phoenix and headed on our vacation to Hawaii!  Chris's brother David is getting married next Saturday in Oahu and he asked Chris to be a groomsman and Ryan to be the ring-bearer.  We decided to go and to turn the trip into a family vacation.  We wanted to visit the Volcano and so  we chose to spend 5 nights on the Big Island of Hawaii, then hop over to Oahu and spend the rest of the time there.

Our flight left at 10:00am and arrived in Kona at 1:00pm.  6 hour flight plus a 3 hour time difference!

We picked up our rental car and checked into our hotel.  We stayed at an Outrigger hotel with an oceanfront room.    It was so beautiful!  The resort was really nice and our room actually jutted out over these tide pools and coral reef.  We could look straight down from our balcony and see tons of fish, sea turtles, and even an eel!

These ancient ruins, just outside our window, are called  "heaius" or ancient Hawaiian Temples.  This is a sacred spot used for royalty and sometimes human sacrifices were done here.  They are in the process of being restored so we couldn't actually go up into the heaius.  It was really cool to be able to see them from the lanai!

We walked around the hotel grounds and the kids waded around in the tide pools.  They swam in the rocky shoreline next to the hotel.  We showered up and then got ready for dinner.

A beautiful sunset ocean view at The Kona Inn Restaurant.  The kids ran and played in the grass area behind us.  Logan and I ordered the fish of the day- Opah while Chris had some chicken pasta.  We ate on the cafe side and it was a very nice first meal in Hawaii!

After dinner we headed back to the hotel and off to bed!
